Win the Morning

Win the Morning is a transformative philosophy developed and led by Greenwood Elementary School to reimagine how students begin their day. More than just a routine, it’s a mindset that prioritizes joy, connection, and purpose from the moment students walk through the door. This approach has not only reshaped mornings at Greenwood but has also been shared with hundreds of schools and thousands of educators across the country. Greenwood has become a beacon of innovation and hope—proving that intentional morning practices can positively impact school climate, build stronger relationships, and improve academic outcomes. Principal Ryan Stein has presented this philosophy at conferences and convocations nationwide, inspiring school leaders to adopt similar strategies that support meaningful engagement and staff retention. At its heart, Win the Morning is rooted in the belief that every child deserves a school experience that is memorable, empowering, and emotionally fulfilling.

The philosophy centers around five key components: Morning Clubs, Morning Choice, Morning Announcements, Morning Meetings, and Morning Celebrations. Together, these practices turn arrival time into a dynamic, student-centered experience that builds excitement for learning. By reimagining how the school day begins, Greenwood has created a culture where students feel welcome, energized, and ready to engage. Each morning is an opportunity to spark joy, reinforce values, and set a tone of positivity and purpose that carries through the rest of the day.

What truly sets Win the Morning apart is its ability to cultivate community and a sense of belonging right from the start. Rather than beginning with silent worksheets or homework review, students are offered meaningful choices in how they ease into their day. Activities include board games, card games, STEAM challenges, art stations, journaling, mindfulness, and hands-on tasks like puzzles and LEGO building. These options encourage creativity, connection, and calm while supporting social-emotional development and student autonomy.

Our Morning Announcements and Shoutouts create a culture of recognition and gratitude by spotlighting birthdays, acts of kindness, academic successes, innovative teaching, and House Points. From 7:15 to 7:55 AM, the school gathers for Morning Celebrations—high-energy, whole-school events that feature student performances, leadership moments, dance parties, live DJ sets, poetry slams, trivia games, and surprise visits from community members or alumni. These celebrations not only amplify school spirit, but they also reinforce our core values and ensure that every student begins the day feeling seen, valued, and inspired.
